David is a writer-director working across fiction, non-fiction and branded projects.
He is currently in production on his debut non-fiction feature SMOKING SHORES, with funding and support from Truth Department, Ffilm Cymru Wales, Creative Wales, and executive producers Michael Sheen (MASTERS OF SEX, FROST/NIXON, THE QUEEN) and Sonja Henrici (MERKEL, THE OIL MACHINE). The project was selected for London Film Festival 2023 Works-in-Progress Showcase (https://www.bfi.org.uk/london-film-festival/news/projects-lff-works-progress-showcase-2023) and will have its festival premiere in 2025 (TBC).
David’s last short fiction film OUT FOR A WALK starred Matthew Beard (VIENNA BLOOD, THE IMITATION GAME) and Saskia Reeves (THE OUTRUN, SLOW HORSES) and screened at numerous film festivals around the world, including Drama International Short Film Festival, Filmfestival Kitzbuhel and Aesthetica Short Film Festival.
As a director of documentary content and commercials, David has created work for clients including Oakley, adidas, Reebok, Kendrick Lamar, Brighter Sounds and Henry Poole. His branded work reflects his own love of surfing, extreme sports, and general outdoor adventures, as well as fashion and music. Like his fiction and non-fiction films, David’s branded work is boldly visual and atmospheric, featuring strong story elements, and often featuring archive material that brings out the social, political, cultural and historical resonances of a given narrative. David particularly welcomes and enjoys projects that have a progressive, environmental and/or charitable dimension to them.
David attended the MFA Directing programme at the American Film Institute Conservatory, and also holds a BA in Film Studies and Philosophy. He is co-founder of the research group Res Communis (http://www.rescommunis.org) which explores urgent questions of collectivity in the context of rising planetary division and crisis.
David has also worked as a film journalist for Little White Lies (https://lwlies.com) and as a producer of artists’ film and video projects with Portland Green (http://www.portlandgreen.com).
